Performance Comparison of the type-2 hypervisor VirtualBox and VMWare. VirtualBox is a community effort backed by a dedicated company: everyone is encouraged to contribute while Oracle ensures the product always meets professional quality criteria. Xen is an open source tool with 208 GitHub stars and 152 GitHub forks. VirtualBox is being actively developed with frequent releases and has an ever growing list of features, supported guest operating systems and platforms it runs on. On the other hand, Xen provides the following key features: Guest Additions: shared folders, seamless windows, 3D virtualization. Some of the features offered by VirtualBox are: VirtualBox and Xen belong to "Virtualization Platform" category of the tech stack. Hardware is emulated via a QEMU device model daemon running as a backend in dom0. Xen-HVM uses device emulation that is based on QEMU to provide I/O virtualization to it’s VMs. It was developed by the Linux Foundation and is supported by Intel. VirtualBox uses some of QEMU’s virtual hardware devices, and has a built in dynamic recompiled based on QEMU as a fallback device. It is a hypervisor using a microkernel design, providing services that allow multiple computer operating systems to execute on the same computer hardware concurrently. On the other hand, Xen is detailed as " Advancing virtualization in a number of different commercial and open source applications". Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2. VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Personally I have zero interest in virtualisation of Windows Server and I don't know why they went out of their way to use it as the basis of their tests. VirtualBox vs Xen: What are the differences?ĭevelopers describe VirtualBox as " Run nearly any operating system on a single machine and to freely switch between OS instances running simultaneously". They should have also done a Linux guest test it'd be more interesting to see how the closely coupled (with the kernel) Xen and KVM hypervisors fair in their best case scenarios.
